UNIT 3 ๐Ÿ˜‚

Haha... see what I did... I used a meme because we are talking about memes. Anyway, this entire unit focused on social media in the classroom. At first glance, when I thought of this I was expecting a bunch of articles just dissing social media because it is so unliked by many. But really, it was articles that showed how much social media has positively affected the classrooms. The kids who are in the classrooms are a generation who grew up with technology their whole lives, and they are being taught by a generation who didn't. I believe that is it important for teachers to do the best they can to teach in a way that is relevant to their students. Meaning, create lessons that their students can relate to. We talked about this last unit so now I'm getting behind, but I do find it really cool that teachers are bringing memes into the classroom because they do so much more than just give us a laugh

Through this unit, I learned that memes can be way more educational than I thought. And, like I said before, it is great that teachers are incorporating them into the classroom because it is a thing that everyone can relate to. Students get to enjoy the assignment while also getting a further explanation of the term or topic being discussed in class. I know that the multiple meme assignments I did in high school and college really helped me get a deeper understanding of what I was learning and it was one of my favorite assignments to do. I know others don't see it like I do and that is totally fine, everyone has their own style. But I feel that the more fun I have doing a lesson or assignment, the more I am going to remember it further down the line. Like I still remember an assignment I did in the fourth grade where I was given a disability and I had to go through the whole day with that given disability and my fellow classmates had to do the same. Now I am not saying it was fun because it was really hard, and having other students in other classrooms is not fun. But it was interactive, and it gave me a better understanding than just reading about disabilities in articles.
I understand that the assignment I just discussed has nothing to do with social media but the intent is there. With teachers creating lesson plans that will pique students' attention, they are more likely to keep it.

Also.... another thing that really struck me is that in the reading from October 2nd, it mentioned that 17% of kids started using social media at age 9. ๐ŸคฏThat is unbelievably crazy to me.

I was finding things like this funny at 9 years old... I still find this funny. But there are 9-year-olds out there now with apps that I didn't get till I was 13. I honestly miss the days when the only thing I had to worry about was if my neighbor's car was parked on the street, cause if it was then I couldn't play street hockey. Now these kids have access to a whole world of things. They can see everything, all they have to do is click a few buttons, and millions of options appear right in front of them. Believe me, I am all for technology but sometimes the possibilities scare me. Anyway........
