So unit 6 was digital composition, we didn't touch too much on it especially with not having class on the 8th. Even without touching on it too much, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of it. We only read one article but we split it up into two days. The second half of the article (pg. 110-123) I took more of a liking to, mainly because of the books they studied.
To Kill a Mockingbird and
Pride and Prejudice are two of my favorite books. I also read
The Outsiders when I was in junior high, I don't remember which grade but I was OBSESSED with the book. And then we watched the movie in class and I became obsessed with the actors. I literally had every single one of them on my wall for the longest time. One thing I liked most about this half of the article was all the remixes. Students could respond and create remixes of texts with a range of other texts. But to me, this section of the article focused more on using the media to better understand a text than using media to read. I never really got into digital composition. I was able to read on a Kindle because those didn't get notifications. At least the paperwhites didn't. But if I were to read on my phone I would get distracted by everything else I could be doing on my phone or all the notifications I would get on my phone, and I would re-read the same section over and over again. I love having a physical book in my hands because I write in all of my books. I don't think there is a single book on myself at home that doesn't have writing in it, except for maybe my expensive classics. I have this copy of
Pride and Prejudice and nothing goes near it when I read it, not any kind of food or liquid. However, I do believe that digital composition can be beneficial for some people if that is their preference. I did find it shocking that many adolescents prefer to read print and older readers increasingly use smartphones for reading purposes. I thought it would have been the other way around. Students prefer print because they enjoy how print texts help create attention and embodied experience. It helps them form a mental connection to other experiences they may have had. Honestly, I don't really understand why they create more connections with print than digital. Maybe is it because with print, there are less distractions and they are more focused. That would be me, so I guess I do understand. I do think that it is great that the older generation is getting in

touch with the newer technology. Usually, they boycott smartphones, or at least every elderly in my family has done that. My uncle still has a flip phone. So, I don't know if anyone else's elders do the same but that is a staple in my house. You should have seen my uncle try VR for the first time. He thought I was making it up. I am getting off track. I do think that digital composition can be beneficial for those who prefer it but I know it is not for everyone and that is ok.
