UNIT 6 😯

Image
So unit 6 was digital composition, we didn't touch too much on it especially with not having class on the 8th. Even without touching on it too much, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of it. We only read one article but we split it up into two days. The second half of the article (pg. 110-123) I took more of a liking to, mainly because of the books they studied. To Kill a Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice  are two of my favorite books. I also read The Outsiders when I was in junior high, I don't remember which grade but I was OBSESSED with the book. And then we watched the movie in class and I became obsessed with the actors. I literally had every single one of them on my wall for the longest time. One thing I liked most about this half of the article was all the remixes. Students could respond and create remixes of texts with a range of other texts. But to me, this section of the article focused more on using the media to better understand a text than using media...

UNIT 5 🎤

In this unit, we focused heavily on podcasting which I loved because I thoroughly enjoy podcasts. I have had little experience in actually making them. I only recorded one podcast in my life and it was in high school. I did a podcast of interviews with the actors in the school play for the media page as a way to get more people interested in seeing the show. Students outside of the theatre club enjoyed the podcast, they thought it was funny and it did bring more people to the box office for the school play. And I will say, I had a lot of fun recording it, and not solely because it got me out of class. I loved getting to go further into the actors' experience with auditions and rehearsals. That started my interest for podcasts. Now I listen to a whole bunch of different podcasts, like criminal podcasts and just plain comedy ones. One of my favorites right now is the You Should Know Podcast. Their short videos have flooded my TikTok feed and it got me to watch their full videos. I th...

UNIT 4 🎮

I love the impressiveness of VR headsets .... it really helps you get your head in the game. HAHA!  In this unit, we talked about the use of video games and virtual reality in the classroom. Video games have evolved tremendously over the past few years. They have become more realistic and more common, Originally started as you playing by yourself and now you can play with any number of people, people from all over the world. And now, they are bringing video games into the classroom as a new educational tool. One thing we mainly touched on was video games in ELA classrooms. "...Video games serve as the locus of a host of other literacy practices such as essay and review writing, digital art-making, and video production," Brady L. Nash wrote in an article we read in class. Games have done more good in the classroom than most people realize. Some just say that it poisons young children's minds. But that isn't going to stop them from playing, so why not make it educatio...

UNIT 3 😂

Haha... see what I did... I used a meme because we are talking about memes. Anyway, this entire unit focused on social media in the classroom. At first glance, when I thought of this I was expecting a bunch of articles just dissing social media because it is so unliked by many. But really, it was articles that showed how much social media has positively affected the classrooms. The kids who are in the classrooms are a generation who grew up with technology their whole lives, and they are being taught by a generation who didn't. I believe that is it important for teachers to do the best they can to teach in a way that is relevant to their students. Meaning, create lessons that their students can relate to. We talked about this last unit so now I'm getting behind, but I do find it really cool that teachers are bringing memes into the classroom because they do so much more than just give us a laugh Through this unit, I learned that memes can be way more educational than I though...

UNIT 2 😁

Hello and welcome back! This blog will cover what was talked about in unit two which was multimodal composition. While we covered multiple ways to achieve multimodal composition like turning school lessons into games like Mr. Cullum in the video "A Touch of Greatness" or making literature engaging, my favorite was process drama. And one thing that blows my mind is how much improv can help students connect with readings. It was an article we read in class written by Lauren Esposito. As I said in my discussion post on the 22nd, improv scares THE LIVING CRAP out of me. Improv is supposed to be fun, thinking off the top of your head, but to me, that sounds absolutely terrifying. I am not good with thinking off my feet and being put on the spot like that is so much pressure. I am not good under pressure. But after reading this article, I learned so much and was extremely surprised.  Improvisation is used far more often than just for theater and acting. It gives students a differ...

UNIT 1 😯

Unit one focused on introducing multimodality. Which honestly, was a word that I had only heard a few times and barely knew the meaning of. But after this unit, I feel like I understand it more. Multimodality can be accomplished in so many different ways, way more than I thought. Some ways that it can be accomplished are through websites, podcasts, videos, graphic novels, collages, and many others. One example that we really touched base on in class was graphic novels. Now, I never really got into graphic novels that much, mainly because I like picturing what was going on in a book myself. What I never realized was how complex it could be to read and fully understand a graphic novel. When we read the article How to Read Graphic Novels as Literature for September 1st, my eyes felt like they were flying over the words but my brain couldn't work fast enough to understand what I was looking at.  This is exactly what I felt as I was reading that article. While I understood the ba...

Introducing Me!!!

Image
HELLO!!!! My name is Noelle Paratore. I am a sophomore here and I am majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing. I am from the extremely small town of Johnstown, PA where there is absolutely nothing to do there but eat pizza. We have a lot of pizza joints there. In my free time, I like to read or watch TV. Recently I have been obsessed with the shows S.W.A.T and Love is Blind. I know, so similar, right? But what I most love to do is spend time with my family and friends, they are most important to me. Some fun facts about me are that I am OBSESSED with cows and I love sunsets! I am keeping this blog for my Writing for Non-Print Media class, to give a little overview of the units we discuss in class.  Now please enjoy this video of cows mooing for 20 minutes :)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVUu8s5NyBQ
